L,
This morning I was sitting at the table eating my breakfast oatmeal. I had just finished making a face in the oatmeal with raisins for the eyes, nose, and mouth and nuts for the ears and cinnamon for the hair. Have you ever used raisins to make a happy face in your bowl of oatmeal? Well, I looked out the window and what a surprise I had. There by the new plant house were Harry and Tom. They walked all around the plant house, stopped and scratched their heads, looked around to see if they could tell how the plant house came to be in their back yard.
I hurried and finished my oatmeal. I rushed to the bathroom and quickly brushed my teeth. After dressing as fast as I could, I filled an oxygen tank and put it in the box on the back of my wheelchair. I put on my black coat, mittens, and hat. I rolled my wheelchair down the ramp in the garage and around the side of my house and came to a stop next to Harry and Tom. Just as I stopped my wheelchair, Dan, Charlie, Samantha walked up.
We all started talking at the same time, Samantha telling the two brothers how we wanted to give them a welcome home present. She told them how the four of us each drew a picture of how we thought the plant house should look and how we had made one plant house with the best ideas form the four pictures. Charlie told Harry and Tom how we asked the man at the store to send his helpers to build the plant house. Dan opened the door to the plant house and showed them the tables where the little plants could sit. I asked everyone to come to my house for snack of apples and cheese.
When we all were sitting around my table sharing a plate of cheese and apple slices, Harry and Tom started telling us about their trip home. Tom told us that when he and Harry talked about coming back home they had to decide if they would take the train or if they would fly on an airplane. Harry said he wanted to try flying on an airplane because he had never been on an airplane before. So they decided to fly home. Have you ever been on an airplane?
When the time came for them to go to the airport Henrietta and Thelma drove them in their car with the flowers on the side. Tom said that when they went inside there was a place to get their ticket and to leave their suitcases. After they did that, they walked down a hallway past a lot of shops and restaurants until they came to a place to sit. Harry told us how they sat and looked out the window watching the airplanes land and take off.
Soon it was time for them to get on the airplane that was to take them home. They gave their ticket to the person and walked down a hallway to the airplane. Tom sat next to the window and Harry sat next to Tom. When all the people had found their seats, the airplane took off in a huge rush. Harry told us that it was kind of scary because he felt pushed back into his seat. Tom said that he enjoyed looking out of the window watching the ground speed past. Tom told us how all of a sudden he felt the airplane lift up into the sky. He looked out the window and saw the airport building getting smaller and smaller.
After they had been flying for a little while, a man came and asked them if they wanted something to drink. Harry told us he had apple juice and Tom had orange juice. When they both had finished their juice Tom took some paper and crayons out of his travel bag and started to draw pictures of the airplane flying through the air. Harry said he was tired and so took a nap. Harry told us that when he woke up from his nap, Tom was looking out of the window at the clouds. Tom said he was just about ready to take a nap when the airplane pilot talked to them over the airplane speaker. She told them the airplane was just about to land.
Tom told us how after they got off the airplane, he and Harry walked for a long time to the place where the suitcases were. He and Harry picked up their suitcases and walked outside to the place where the taxicabs were. After the taxicab driver helped them put their suitcases in the trunk of the taxicab, they all got into the taxicab and came home. Tom said it was so late when they arrived home that they were too tired to unpack their suitcases. They just brushed their teeth and went to bed.
Harry and Tom said they were glad that they had visited Henrietta and Thelma. However, they were happier to be back home. Have you ever been away for a long vacation? Can you draw a picture of your long vacation? Do you think you can draw a picture of you flying in an airplane? What color would you make an airplane?

Harry and Tom friends make them a surprise
L,
Yesterday afternoon after I got up from my nap, I was sitting in my wheelchair looking out the window at the back yard. I could see Harry and Tom’s house and began to wonder when they would return form their vacation. As I was sitting there I saw the three friends Charlie, Dan and Samantha walking around Harry and Tom’s house. They were talking to each other and would look at the sky, and than at the ground and at the trees. I hurried and put on my coat, mittens and my new black stocking hat, after filling up my oxygen tank I hurried down the wheelchair ramp in the garage and rolled around the corner of my house. I rushed through my back yard and rolled to a stop next to Samantha. By the time I arrived, Charlie and Dan were not there. I asked Samantha what they had been talking about. Samantha said they had decided to build a plant house for their two friends Harry and Tom. I asked her what a plant house was. She said they wanted to build a little house that had all windows. This would allow the sun to shine into the house and keep it warm so Harry and Tom could start their garden plants earlier. She told me that because Harry and Tom’s house was an underground house they were not able to start their garden plants early because there was no sunlight in their house.
As we were talking, Charlie and Dan came walking up. Charlie had a pad of paper and Dan had a couple of pencils. Charlie gave each of us some paper and Dan gave us each a pencil. The four of use sat in Harry and Tom’s yard and began drawing pictures of plant houses that had all windows. After we each had made a picture, we looked at each other’s picture and talked about what we liked best from each picture. After talking about what we liked about each picture we drew a plant house with the best ideas from each of our pictures. By this time it was late and time for each of us to go home for supper. However, before we went to our homes, I asked the three friends to come to my house the next morning.
The next morning when the three friends came, the four of us sat at the table and talked about how to build the plant house. Charlie suggested we go to the store and ask the man there to send out his helpers to build the house for us. So we went to the store and showed the man our plant house picture. He told us that he would get windows and other wood and send his helper to build the plant house.
Two days later, a yellow truck drove down the street and stopped in front of my house. As I watched two people carried a lot of things around the side of my house to Harry and Tom’s yard. When they had carried everything from the yellow truck to Harry and Tom’s yard, they began to build the plant house. By suppertime, they had finished and there in Harry and Tom’s back yard stood a plant house with windows on all sides and also on the top.
As I looked at the plant house, I thought the plants in that house would get lots and lots of sunlight and also would be kept warm. I wonder if you would draw a plant house? Can you draw a picture of the yellow truck and one of the people making the plant house?

Harry and Tom Use the Telephone
L,
I’ve just received a telephone call from Harry and Tom. They called to tell me about the some of the things they had done with Henrietta and Thelma.
One day four bears drove to the beach in Henrietta and Thelma’s car. When they arrived at the beach they parked the car in the parking lot and they each took something down to the beach. Henrietta took the big purple umbrella. Thelma had the large beach blanket. Harry carried the huge red and green picnic basket. Tom had to use both hands to carry the cooler. They walked from the car to the beach. Once they got to the beach, Henrietta stuck the umbrella in the sand and opened it up. Thelma spread the blanket out in the shade from the umbrella. Harry and Tom put the picnic basket and the cooler under the umbrella and ran down the sandy beach into the ocean water. After swimming for a while they came back to the umbrella and lay down on the blanket.
As Harry and Tom lay under the umbrella, they heard the sound of an airplane. As the airplane flew closer, Henrietta and Thelma told Harry and Tom to come out from under the umbrella and look at the airplane. When they looked at the airplane, they saw that was pulling a sign. The airplane’s sign said, “WELCOME TO THE BEACH HARRY AND TOM”. All the people on the beach saw the sign and stood looking and pointing at the airplane. When some of the people around Henrietta and Thelma began asking who Harry and Tom were, Henrietta told them about Harry and Tom.
After the airplane left, the brother and sisters raced down to the water and had swimming races. When they grew tired of the swimming races, Thelma went back to their umbrella and returned with a beach ball. They played with the ball throwing it to each other. Sometime one of them would not catch the ball and would have to swim after it. By lunchtime they were both hungry and tired.
They swam back to the beach, walked on the sand to the big purple umbrella. Once there, they sat on the large beach blanket and opened the huge red and green picnic basket. Harry gave everyone a plate, a cup and napkins. Tom opened the cooler and asked who wanted pink lemon aid and who wanted yellow lemon aid. After everyone had something to drink, Harry handed everyone a peanut butter and honey sandwich. When they all were finished with their sandwiches, Henrietta opened the picnic basket and handed out apples.
After lunch when everything from lunch was cleaned up and put back into the huge red and green picnic basket they all took a nap. They were able to all lay on the large beach blanket that Thelma had carried from the car. When they woke up from their naps, they went down the beach close to the water and began to make a huge sandcastle. They spent the rest of the afternoon making the sandcastle. Finally it was time to go home so the four bears left the sandcastle. Do you think the sandcastle is still there? Can you draw a picture of the sandcastle?
Henrietta took the big purple umbrella. Thelma had the large beach blanket. Harry carried the huge red and green picnic basket. Tom using both hands carried the cooler. They walked from the beach to the car. After they put everything in the car and when each had their seatbelt on, Henrietta and Thelma said they had a surprise for Harry and Tom on the way home. Harry and Tom looked at each other and couldn’t guess what the surprise was. What do you think the surprise was?
The surprise was that they stopped at an Ice Cream store. When they went inside the store, there were so many different kinds of Ice Cream that it took Tom a long time to decide what type of ice cream to have. What is your favorite type of ice cream? What type of ice cream did Henrietta, Thelma and Harry have? What type of ice cream did Tom finally decide to have?
Do you think you could draw picture of a picnic on the beach? What color would you make the large beach blanket that Thelma had? Have you ever made a sandcastle? Maybe you could draw a picture of the four sisters and brother making their sandcastle.

Harry and Tom Arrive in California
L,
Today I received a letter from Tom telling me more about their vacation. Even though the sun was shinning, it was cold outside; I put on my black coat, mittens and gray hat. I drove my purple wheel chair as fast as I could down the ramp and around the side of the house. However when I got to the back yard, I could not find Dan, Charlie or Samantha. There was a red Cardinal on the bird feeder. When I her if she had seen the three friends, she told me they had gone to the store. I thanked her and went back into the house to wait for the three friend’s return.
Just before lunch, I saw them walking down the street carrying bags of groceries. When they reached the house, I asked if they wanted to come for lunch. Samantha said they had talked about making a surprise picnic lunch for me. When they came in side, I had the old red blanket spread out on the living room floor. After the four of us sat down, Dan reached into the large brown picnic basket and took out red cups, yellow plates, and green and blue napkins. Charlie took out the sandwiches. There were round sandwiches, square sandwiches, and sandwiches that looked like triangles. Each different shaped sandwich was different. One was peanut butter, one was cheese, and one was lunchmeat. Next Samantha poured each of us a glass of red milk.
Once we all were ready, I opened Tom’s letter and began to read.
As we ate our different shaped sandwiches, we talked about Harry and Tom’s train ride. We wondered what they would be doing tomorrow. What do you think they will do? Can you draw a picture of Henrietta and Thelma’s car? What color would you make their car? What color flowers would you put on their car? Do you know how to make red milk?
Until next time,

Dear Pippy,
What fun we are having riding on a train. Harry and I spend a lot of time looking out the window at the mountains. We wish you were with us so that you could see the tall mountains. Some of the mountains are covered in snow and are so tall that their tops are hiding behind the clouds.
We traveled all day; Harry and I played games, read books, and looked out the windows some more. After supper on we went for a walk from the first car to the last car of the train. We spent a second night sleeping on the train. The next morning, after breakfast we went back to our room and waited until the train arrived at the train station.
When Harry and I walked down the steps of the train we saw Henrietta and Thelma. They were holding a big sign over their heads. Can you guess what the sign said? It said, “WELCOME TO CALIFORNIA HARRY AND TOM.” Can you guess what color the sign was? What color would you make the sign?
We all talked at once. Harry and I were busy telling Henrietta and Thelma all about the train ride. Henrietta and Thelma were busy telling us about all the fun things we would be doing. As we talked we walked to the girls car. It didn’t have a top and they had painted flowers on the side of it. When we asked them what they did when it rained, they told us that top was just folded down and they could put it back up when it rained.
Henrietta drove us home and Thelma showed us the room we would be staying in. After lunch Henrietta, Thelma and Harry took a nap. I wasn’t tired and wanted to write this letter.
I wish you could be here with us. I really miss you, Dan, Charlie, and Samantha. Please read this letter them for us.
Your friends,
Tom and Harry

Harry and Tom Take the Train to California
L,
Yesterday afternoon, Dan came to the front door with my mail. He was all excited because I had received a letter from Harry and Tom. I told him that I would cut up some red apples and some yellow cheese. I asked him to hurry and ask Charlie and Samantha to come for a snack and we would read Harry ant Tom’s letter together. When the three friends returned, we sat around the kitchen table and had the apples and cheese for a snack. After the snack, we opened the letter and read it. Here is what Harry and Tom wrote.
Well, Charlie, Dan, and Samantha were happy to get this letter. We wondered what color the train is. What color did you make the train the train is? Can you draw a picture of the children waiting for the school bus?
Until next time,
Grandpippy

Dear Pippy,
As you know we took a bright green taxi to the train station. It took a long time to go from our house to the train station. When we arrived at the train station, while I our suitcases out of the trunk of the bright green taxi, Tom paid the taxi driver. After the bright green taxi drove away, we walked into the train station. The train station was very large and very noisy. There were a lot of people walking around and sitting on the benches. Tom and I didn’t know where we should go to get on the train. We walked around until we saw a policewoman. Tom said I should ask her where we should go to get on the train. She asked me if we had bought our train tickets. I didn’t know and said I would have to ask Tom. When Tom said he had not bought the train tickets yet, the policewoman showed us where to buy the tickets.
After we bought the train tickets, Tom and I picked up our suitcases and followed the policewoman to the train. When we got to the train, she told the conductor we were going to visit our sisters who lived in California. The conductor showed us where our room was. Because, we both were tired after the long taxi trip, the busy time getting the train tickets and finding our room on the train, we decided to take naps.
When we woke up the train had left the station and was going down the tracks toward California. Tom and I left our room and walked through the train until we came to the dinning car. We sat at a table by a window. As we ate our supper, we looked out the window and watched the scenery go by. After supper we walked through the entire train. As we walked, we stopped and talked to some of the other people on the train.
The next morning, we sat at the same table and had breakfast. I had oatmeal with raisins and honey. Tom had blueberry pancakes with maple syrup. I looked out the window and saw children standing waiting for the school bus. When I waved to the children, they waved back. I wondered what they had for breakfast. What did you have for breakfast this morning. Can you draw a picture of your breakfast?
After breakfast, Tom looked at a book about the train and I wrote you this letter. The conductor said if I give him this letter, he will mail it to you. Tom said to tell you he plans to write you the next letter. Be sure to read this letter to Dan, Charlie and Samantha.
Your friends,
Harry and Tom
Well, Charlie, Dan, and Samantha were happy to get this letter. We wondered what color the train is. What color did you make the train the train is? Can you draw a picture of the children waiting for the school bus?

Harry and Tom get ready for Vacation
L,
Last week Sunday afternoon; I saw, Charlie, Dan and Samantha standing in the backyard by the bird feeder talking to each other. When they saw me sitting in my wheelchair watching them, they came over came over to the patio doors. They asked if I had heard the news about Harry and Tom. I told them I had company visiting and hadn’t seen Harry and Tom recently. Charlie told me that Harry and Tom were planning on going on a long vacation and may not come back for a couple weeks. Dan said Harry had told him they were going to California to visit their sisters Henrietta and Thelma. Samantha told me that Tom had said they would go either by a train or they would fly in an airplane to California. Have you ever been in a train or in an airplane?
On Monday, after I had a soup and salad lunch with a bright red apple for dessert, Tom knocked on the front door. When I opened the door, Tom told me they would be gone for a couple weeks visiting their sisters. I asked how they were going to travel to California. Tom said he wanted to fly in an airplane, however Harry wanted to take a train. Tom told me that after he and Harry talked about which to take they, decided to take the train this time and maybe take an airplane the next time. After telling me that, Tom said he had to hurry back to their underground house because he and Harry were busy getting ready for the vacation.
Tuesday morning I saw Harry and Tom take their red wagon, walk around the side of my house, and go down the road toward town. Later that day I saw them coming back from town with the wagon full of bags. When they came closer to the house, I could see that the bags were all different kind of birdseed food. I watched them go to the back yard where they met Charlie the cougar. Charlie took the handle of the red wagon and pulled the wagon to his house. When I went to bed that night, I was still wondering why Charlie had Harry and Tom’s red wagon. I also wondered what he was going to do with all the birdseed.
All day Wednesday, whenever I looked out the window at their house, I didn’t see either Harry or Tom. After lunch, I took a nap and when I woke up from my nap, I saw Dan, Charlie, and Samantha by the bird feeder. I opened the door and asked them if Harry and Tom had left for California. Samantha told me that they hadn’t left yet. She also told me that Harry and Tom had been busy all day cleaning their house.
Thursday afternoon, the three friends Dan, Charlie, and Samantha knocked on the back door. I asked them to come in for some cookies and hot chocolate. When we each had a cup of hot chocolate and a cookie, they told me how they would all be busy when Harry and Tom were gone. Dan said Tom had asked him to get their mail each day and bring it down stairs to their underground house and put the mail in the box at the bottom of the fire pole. Charlie said Harry asked him to keep the bird feeder filled with birdseed. Now I know why Charlie had the red wagon. It was to help him carry the birdseed to the birdfeeder. Samantha said Harry and Tom had asked her to watch all the plants in their house and to give them water when they needed some.
Late Friday afternoon, Harry and Tom called me on the telephone to say they wanted to bring supper. I said that I would like that and asked them what they would bring for supper. Harry said that I would have to wait and see because it was to be a surprise. After the surprise supper, Harry and Tom told me that they would take a taxi to the train station the next day. If you were Harry and Tom what would you fix for a surprise supper?
Early Saturday morning, a bright green taxi parked in the front of the house. As I watched, Harry and Tom came from their house. Dan, Charlie, and Samantha met them by the taxi to say goodbye and to tell them to enjoy their vacation. Harry and Tom put their suitcases in the trunk of the taxi and got in the back seat. As the taxi drove down the street, Harry and Tom turned to wave goodbye to me.
Can you draw a picture of the taxicab? Do you think you can draw a train? What color would you make the train?

Harry and Tom go sledding
L,
Well Harry and Tom slept late most days these past two week. I think they were tired from being so busy getting ready for Christmas. However, after lunch, I would see them walking down the street pulling their new sleds. I think they were on their way to the sledding hill in the park. One day they stopped and asked me if I would go sledding with them. I told them it is hard for me to go sledding because of my wheel chair. They told me they going to the store to buy balloons and others things for a party. They said that after lunch, after they returned from the store, they would take me sledding. When I asked them how they would do that with me being in the wheel chair, they said it would be a surprise. I was so excited I wanted lunchtime to hurry and get here so I could see how Harry and Tom would take the wheel chair with me in it sledding. How do you think they planned on taking me sledding?
I was so excited I could hardly eat my lunch of red tomato soup and brown bread with purple grape jam and a yellow apple. After lunch, I put on my coat, hat, mittens and wrapping a long scarf around my neck I rolled down the ramp and out the garage. I waited by the front of the house for Harry and Tom. Soon I saw them walking around the corner of the house pulling their new sleds. They came up to me and Harry and Tom picked me up out of my wheel chair and put in their orange sled. Harry and Tom each took hold of the rope and pulling the sled I was in walked down the street towards the park. I held the rope pulling the purple sled behind me.
When we arrived at the park, they pulled me up the sledding hill and down the hill I went. When I got to the bottom I saw Harry and Tom sledding down the hill in the other sled after me. After an hour of sledding we were getting cold so we went to the refreshment area and had some hot chocolate and cookies. What type of cookies do you like with hot chocolate?
While we were drinking hot chocolate and eating our cookies I looked back up the sledding hill. I saw Charlie the cougar, Dan the Deer and Samantha the squirrel sledding down the hill together in a large sled. When Charlie, Dan, and Samantha saw us they came to the refreshment area and had some hot apple juice and cookies. The six of us stayed in the refreshment area until we had warmed up. We spend the rest of the afternoon racing each other down the sledding hill.
Late in the afternoon the six of us went home. We all were cold and wet from all the snow. I was glad Harry and Tom were such good friends and had been able to come up with a way to take me sledding. When we got home I asked the five friends to come in for supper. I made red tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches with yellow cheese. Do want to get some paper and draw a picture of the six friends coming home after sledding. Or would you want to draw a picture of them sledding down the hill.

Harry and Tom's Christmas
L,
Well yesterday was Christmas. Harry and Tom were busy all week last week. They continued to bake Christmas cookies and cakes. One night last week when I was already in bed, I heard someone on the front lawn singing Christmas Carols. I got out of bed and put on my robe, got into my wheelchair and went to the front door. Who do you think I saw when I opened the front door? Standing in the front lawn were Harry, Tom, Dan the deer, Charlie the cougar, and Samantha the squirrel. They told me that they were going around neighborhood singing at each house.
The five friends look cold so I asked them if they wanted to come in and have some hot chocolate and cookies that my mom had baked. They said that they had a fire burning by Harry and Tom’s house and asked me if I would like to come with them and have hot apple juice and some of the cookies that Harry and Tom had baked. I said yes and asked them to come in while I changed my pajamas and put on warm clothes and a coat, mittens, and a hat. After I was ready, we all went down the ramp, out the garage, and around the corner of the house to the back yard. Harry and Tom had their outdoor Christmas tree’s lights turned on and a nice warm fire burning. Harry and Tom served us nice hot apple juice. They also had Hazelnut honey cookies shaped like stars and Christmas trees. They also gave each of us a piece of warm apple cake with a candy rain deer frosting.
When I talked to Harry and Tom last night, they told me that they both received new coats, mittens, and hats from their mom and dad from Florida. Their sisters, Henrietta and Thelma who live in California sent them a new red wagon and two sleds to use in the snow. One of the sleds was purple and the other one was orange.
I told Harry and Tom that I had seen Dan, Charlie, and Samantha walking to their house early Christmas morning. They told me that they had invited them to spend Christmas day with them. I think they made waffles for breakfast and after that they opened the presents they had given each other. Late in the day they had a special dinner for Christmas.
What presents do you think the five friends gave each other? If you were to make Harry and Tom a special Christmas dinner, what would you make for them? Do you think you can draw and color a picture of Harry and Tom’s new sleds.

Harry and Tom Continue Preparing for Christmas
L,
It certainly has been busy here this past week. Every day Harry and Tom send large colorful packages to their family and other friends. Also every afternoon, after the mail has come, I see Harry and Tom coming around the corner of the house with their red wagon and go to the mail box to get the many packages the mail carrier left for them.
One sunny afternoon, I was sitting outside when Harry and Tom came with the wagon to get their mail. I asked them who they were sending so many presents to. Tom told me their mom and dad did not like the cold and snowy weather at their home in the Michigan U.P. Now their mother and father go to Florida where it is warm and sunny during the winter. In Florida they have a house on the beach by the ocean. Their house has lots of windows to let in the cool ocean breeze and a large porch in the front where they sit and eat their breakfast. Harry and Tom also told me that they have two sisters. Their sisters, Henrietta and Thelma live in California. Because their family lived far away in two different states, they have to send their presents to them. Harry told me that they were finished shopping, wrapping, and sending all the presents to their family.
The next morning, I smelled the most delicious baking smells coming from Harry and Tom’s house. I wondered what they were doing, so I made some hot chocolate, put it in a thermos and took some Christmas cookies from our cookie jar. I put thermos of hot chocolate and the Christmas cookies in the box on the back of my wheelchair. I rolled down the ramp, out the garage, and went around the corner of my house to their house in the back yard. I knocked on their door and when Tom came up the stairs and opened the door, I asked if he and Harry would like some hot chocolate and cookies. Tom said they would and because I could not get my wheelchair down the stairs, he and Harry would come outside and have some hot chocolate and cookies with me.
As we sat around the fire in drank the hot chocolate and ate the cookies; they told me that they were busy baking their favorite Christmas cookies and cakes. I asked them what the two of them would do with so many cookies and cakes. They told me they would make hot apple juice and take the cookies, cakes and hot apple juice to share with the others after the Christmas program. They also told me that they liked to wrap some of the Christmas cookies and cakes in packages and on Christmas Eve leave them at their friend’s doors. I think that Charley the cougar, Dan the deer, and Samantha the squirrel will have a nice surprise on Christmas morning.
What color wrapping paper would you use to wrap the cookies and cakes that Harry and Tom are going to leave on their friend’s doors? Do you think you can draw a picture of Harry and Tom’s mom and dad’s house in Florida? What color would you make the house?

Harry and Tom Prepare for Christmas
L,
One day last week, I looked out the window and saw a Christmas trees being carried past the window. I hurried to a window and looked out at the back yard in time to see Harry and Tom carrying a big Christmas tree to the door of their underground house. When they reached the door and tried to carry the tree through the door, they discovered the tree was so large that they would not be able to get it into their house. What to do? They measured the tree, measured the door, took their hats off, scratched their heads, and talked to each other about what to do. Because I was in the house, I could not hear what they were saying. As I sat looking out the window, I saw Harry and Tom go back to the front of our house and walk off down the street. I did not know what they were doing. What do you think they were doing?
Well, later that morning, I saw Harry and Tom coming down the street carrying another Christmas tree. Actually, Harry was carrying the tree and Tom was pulling a red wagon that was full of boxes and bags. When they came to their door, Tom opened the door and Harry had no trouble bringing the new Christmas tree down the stairs. As Tom was carrying the boxes and bag from the red wagon down the stairs, Harry walked off into the trees and talked to Dan the deer. Dan, his family, and Charley the cougar live in the woods at the end of our street. After talking to Harry, Dan ran off toward his house and came back with Charley and Samantha, a squirrel, who lives in a nest high up in a tree. They knocked on Harry and Tom’s door and after a short wait Harry and Tom came outside and the five friends took the Christmas tree, that was too large to go through Harry and Tom’s door, and set it up in the yard and began to decorate it. Harry and Tom had some dried cranberries. Dan had some colorful Indian corn. Charley had lots and lots of brightly colored leaves that he had collected and Samantha had a bag of acorns and other nuts that she had gathered and painted many different bright colors. So the five friends sat down in a circle and began to string the dried cranberries, Indian corn, colored leaves and nuts together. After they had made long strings of dried cranberries, Indian corn, leaves, and nuts, they stood in a circle around the tree and began to decorate the tree.
I wanted to help so I made them a lunch of hot soup, cheese sandwiches, and apples for dessert. I put the hot soup in a thermos, the sandwiches and apples in bags and put everything is the box on the back of my wheelchair. I went down the ramp, out the garage door, and around the side of the house to the five friends. They stopped decorating the tree and we all had a picnic lunch around the fire they had. After lunch, I went back into my house and had to take a nap. When I woke up and looked out the window, I saw that the five friends had finished decorating the tree and had gone home.
That night after everyone had gone to bed, I got out of bed and looked out the window and saw bright Christmas lights on the tree. However, when I went back to bed wondered how Harry and Tom had decorated the tree they had carried down the stairs to their house. Do you think you can get some paper and draw a Christmas tree and decorate it? Would you put lights on their Christmas tree? What would you put on the very top of the tree?

Harry and Tom decide to build a house.
L,
Well after Harry and Tom told me that they were going to stay, I began to think about how cold and snowy the winters can be here. So one cold morning in October, I made a large pot of hot oatmeal and brought it out to their tent. As I knocked on the tent door, I heard Harry ask Tom what they would do when it got really cold. Tom told Harry that he also wondered how they would stay warm and dry. When Harry opened the door, I asked him how they were doing and Tom answered and said they were wondering how they would like being in a tent when it got really cold.
As I gave them the big pot of warm oatmeal, I told them I thought they should build an underground house. I said they could put the door to the house under the trees in the back yard. They were so excited that they almost didn’t eat the oatmeal. They told me not to worry about building the house, they knew all about building houses. So, after breakfast, they began making house plans. The house would be all under ground with two large bedrooms, one for Harry and the other for Tom. There would be a roomy kitchen, a TV room with a fireplace, a computer room, and a bathroom with a HUGE bathtub the size Michigan Black Bears like.
All the rest of that week, people would park their cars and trucks at the front of our house and walk around to the back yard and talk to Harry and Tom about the plans for their new underground house. Harry and Tom had to decide what color the HUGE bathtub should be, how big their bedrooms should be, and should they have both a fire pole to slide down into the house and stairs or just stairs. By the end of the week, they were so tired of making so many decisions that they decided to not worry about the house and go for a long walk in the woods looking for nuts to pick, save and roast by the fireplace on a cold winter night.
The next Monday morning, a big red truck drove up to the front of the house and a big purple tractor slowly drove off the truck and around the side of the house to the back yard. There was a lot of loud noise and by bedtime that night, there was a huge hole in the back yard. Before breakfast the next morning, there were huge blue dump trucks, green cement trucks, and lots and lots of people in shiny yellow hard hats busy at work putting gravel and cement on the floor of Harry and Tom’s new house and pouring the walls and ceiling. I was busy that day making lots of hot chocolate and grilled cheese sandwiches for all the people helping Harry and Tom build their house. By suppertime, Harry, Tom and I were so tired that we almost fell asleep at the table eating supper. It took another week of busy, busy days and finally the walls were all finished and the roof was put on. All Harry and Tom would have to do would be to paint their different rooms and move in.
However, Harry and Tom were having trouble deciding what color to paint the kitchen, TV room with the fireplace, computer room, and each of their bedrooms. If you were Harry and Tom what color would you make each room?

Harry and Tom Arrive
L,
One day in October I looked outside and saw two black bears. These black bears looked a little strange. After I watched them for a time, I realized the reason they looked strange to me was they were dressed in flannel shirts and bib overalls, the type of overalls farmers wore when I was your age. Because they were sitting in our back yard, I thought I would go outside and introduce myself. So I put an oxygen tank on my wheelchair, rolled down the ramp, out the garage, and went around the house to the back yard.
I introduced myself and they told me their names were Harry and Tom. They said they were brothers and that Tom was the older brother. They told me they came from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and were traveling south for the winter. Well I said that if they were tired they were welcome to stay and spend some time at our house. They said they appreciated the offer and because yes they were a bit tired from traveling, they would accept my offer.
When they told me they had a tent I suggested they put it up in the trees at the back of our yard. Later that evening when it was getting dark, I noticed a small campfire and what smelled like hot chocolate and a camp stew cooking. It appeared that Harry and Tom were all settled in for a lovely evening with a nice campfire, hot chocolate, stew and all the tinkling stars above them. Seeing them so comfortable made me glad I was able to offer them the use of the back yard. I had a hard time going to sleep that night because I was so happy that Harry and Tom had decided to stay. I could hardly wait for the next day to arrive so I could go out and visit with Harry and Tom again.
What color do you think their tent is? Can you draw a picture of Harry and Tom standing by their tent?

Intoduction
Harry and Tom the introduction.
When C and K told us we would be Grandparents, I started thinking about how my father would send his children a weekly email. In his emails Dad would tell about his youth growing up in IL. I decided that writing a weekly email about my youth might not interest a young child. One day, while sitting in my wheel chair looking out the window at the row of trees in the back yard, I decided to write a weekly story.
I wanted these stories to contain several things. They had to be interesting allowing the reader to use their imagination. I wanted the stories to invite the reader to interact with the story. The stories are written to illustrate how we can and should help each other. Finally, I wanted the stories to show that even though someone may be handicapped we can include them in our everyday activities.
It took several months of thinking of different ideas. I would come up with an idea, think about it and try to tell a story. While some ideas worked better than others did none seemed to meet the goals I had. One day I decided to tell a story about two black bears. The black bears seemed promising and after a couple months they formed personalities and seemed to fill the goals I had set forth for my stories. Thus Harry and Tom were born.
I am not certain that I will be able to achieve all these goals. However, I am going to try. So these stories will be part of my legacy to my grandchildren.
