Harry and Tom Take an Airplane Home

L,

This morning I was sitting at the table eating my breakfast oatmeal. I had just finished making a face in the oatmeal with raisins for the eyes, nose, and mouth and nuts for the ears and cinnamon for the hair. Have you ever used raisins to make a happy face in your bowl of oatmeal? Well, I looked out the window and what a surprise I had. There by the new plant house were Harry and Tom. They walked all around the plant house, stopped and scratched their heads, looked around to see if they could tell how the plant house came to be in their back yard.

I hurried and finished my oatmeal. I rushed to the bathroom and quickly brushed my teeth. After dressing as fast as I could, I filled an oxygen tank and put it in the box on the back of my wheelchair. I put on my black coat, mittens, and hat. I rolled my wheelchair down the ramp in the garage and around the side of my house and came to a stop next to Harry and Tom. Just as I stopped my wheelchair, Dan, Charlie, Samantha walked up.

We all started talking at the same time, Samantha telling the two brothers how we wanted to give them a welcome home present. She told them how the four of us each drew a picture of how we thought the plant house should look and how we had made one plant house with the best ideas form the four pictures. Charlie told Harry and Tom how we asked the man at the store to send his helpers to build the plant house. Dan opened the door to the plant house and showed them the tables where the little plants could sit. I asked everyone to come to my house for snack of apples and cheese.

When we all were sitting around my table sharing a plate of cheese and apple slices, Harry and Tom started telling us about their trip home. Tom told us that when he and Harry talked about coming back home they had to decide if they would take the train or if they would fly on an airplane. Harry said he wanted to try flying on an airplane because he had never been on an airplane before. So they decided to fly home. Have you ever been on an airplane?

When the time came for them to go to the airport Henrietta and Thelma drove them in their car with the flowers on the side. Tom said that when they went inside there was a place to get their ticket and to leave their suitcases. After they did that, they walked down a hallway past a lot of shops and restaurants until they came to a place to sit. Harry told us how they sat and looked out the window watching the airplanes land and take off.

Soon it was time for them to get on the airplane that was to take them home. They gave their ticket to the person and walked down a hallway to the airplane. Tom sat next to the window and Harry sat next to Tom. When all the people had found their seats, the airplane took off in a huge rush. Harry told us that it was kind of scary because he felt pushed back into his seat. Tom said that he enjoyed looking out of the window watching the ground speed past. Tom told us how all of a sudden he felt the airplane lift up into the sky. He looked out the window and saw the airport building getting smaller and smaller.

After they had been flying for a little while, a man came and asked them if they wanted something to drink. Harry told us he had apple juice and Tom had orange juice. When they both had finished their juice Tom took some paper and crayons out of his travel bag and started to draw pictures of the airplane flying through the air. Harry said he was tired and so took a nap. Harry told us that when he woke up from his nap, Tom was looking out of the window at the clouds. Tom said he was just about ready to take a nap when the airplane pilot talked to them over the airplane speaker. She told them the airplane was just about to land.

Tom told us how after they got off the airplane, he and Harry walked for a long time to the place where the suitcases were. He and Harry picked up their suitcases and walked outside to the place where the taxicabs were. After the taxicab driver helped them put their suitcases in the trunk of the taxicab, they all got into the taxicab and came home. Tom said it was so late when they arrived home that they were too tired to unpack their suitcases. They just brushed their teeth and went to bed.

Harry and Tom said they were glad that they had visited Henrietta and Thelma. However, they were happier to be back home. Have you ever been away for a long vacation? Can you draw a picture of your long vacation? Do you think you can draw a picture of you flying in an airplane? What color would you make an airplane?

Until next time,

Harry and Tom friends make them a surprise

L,

Yesterday afternoon after I got up from my nap, I was sitting in my wheelchair looking out the window at the back yard. I could see Harry and Tom’s house and began to wonder when they would return form their vacation. As I was sitting there I saw the three friends Charlie, Dan and Samantha walking around Harry and Tom’s house. They were talking to each other and would look at the sky, and than at the ground and at the trees. I hurried and put on my coat, mittens and my new black stocking hat, after filling up my oxygen tank I hurried down the wheelchair ramp in the garage and rolled around the corner of my house. I rushed through my back yard and rolled to a stop next to Samantha. By the time I arrived, Charlie and Dan were not there. I asked Samantha what they had been talking about. Samantha said they had decided to build a plant house for their two friends Harry and Tom. I asked her what a plant house was. She said they wanted to build a little house that had all windows. This would allow the sun to shine into the house and keep it warm so Harry and Tom could start their garden plants earlier. She told me that because Harry and Tom’s house was an underground house they were not able to start their garden plants early because there was no sunlight in their house.

As we were talking, Charlie and Dan came walking up. Charlie had a pad of paper and Dan had a couple of pencils. Charlie gave each of us some paper and Dan gave us each a pencil. The four of use sat in Harry and Tom’s yard and began drawing pictures of plant houses that had all windows. After we each had made a picture, we looked at each other’s picture and talked about what we liked best from each picture. After talking about what we liked about each picture we drew a plant house with the best ideas from each of our pictures. By this time it was late and time for each of us to go home for supper. However, before we went to our homes, I asked the three friends to come to my house the next morning.

The next morning when the three friends came, the four of us sat at the table and talked about how to build the plant house. Charlie suggested we go to the store and ask the man there to send out his helpers to build the house for us. So we went to the store and showed the man our plant house picture. He told us that he would get windows and other wood and send his helper to build the plant house.

Two days later, a yellow truck drove down the street and stopped in front of my house. As I watched two people carried a lot of things around the side of my house to Harry and Tom’s yard. When they had carried everything from the yellow truck to Harry and Tom’s yard, they began to build the plant house. By suppertime, they had finished and there in Harry and Tom’s back yard stood a plant house with windows on all sides and also on the top.

As I looked at the plant house, I thought the plants in that house would get lots and lots of sunlight and also would be kept warm. I wonder if you would draw a plant house? Can you draw a picture of the yellow truck and one of the people making the plant house?

Harry and Tom Use the Telephone

L,

I’ve just received a telephone call from Harry and Tom. They called to tell me about the some of the things they had done with Henrietta and Thelma.

One day four bears drove to the beach in Henrietta and Thelma’s car. When they arrived at the beach they parked the car in the parking lot and they each took something down to the beach. Henrietta took the big purple umbrella. Thelma had the large beach blanket. Harry carried the huge red and green picnic basket. Tom had to use both hands to carry the cooler. They walked from the car to the beach. Once they got to the beach, Henrietta stuck the umbrella in the sand and opened it up. Thelma spread the blanket out in the shade from the umbrella. Harry and Tom put the picnic basket and the cooler under the umbrella and ran down the sandy beach into the ocean water. After swimming for a while they came back to the umbrella and lay down on the blanket.

As Harry and Tom lay under the umbrella, they heard the sound of an airplane. As the airplane flew closer, Henrietta and Thelma told Harry and Tom to come out from under the umbrella and look at the airplane. When they looked at the airplane, they saw that was pulling a sign. The airplane’s sign said, “WELCOME TO THE BEACH HARRY AND TOM”. All the people on the beach saw the sign and stood looking and pointing at the airplane. When some of the people around Henrietta and Thelma began asking who Harry and Tom were, Henrietta told them about Harry and Tom.

After the airplane left, the brother and sisters raced down to the water and had swimming races. When they grew tired of the swimming races, Thelma went back to their umbrella and returned with a beach ball. They played with the ball throwing it to each other. Sometime one of them would not catch the ball and would have to swim after it. By lunchtime they were both hungry and tired.

They swam back to the beach, walked on the sand to the big purple umbrella. Once there, they sat on the large beach blanket and opened the huge red and green picnic basket. Harry gave everyone a plate, a cup and napkins. Tom opened the cooler and asked who wanted pink lemon aid and who wanted yellow lemon aid. After everyone had something to drink, Harry handed everyone a peanut butter and honey sandwich. When they all were finished with their sandwiches, Henrietta opened the picnic basket and handed out apples.

After lunch when everything from lunch was cleaned up and put back into the huge red and green picnic basket they all took a nap. They were able to all lay on the large beach blanket that Thelma had carried from the car. When they woke up from their naps, they went down the beach close to the water and began to make a huge sandcastle. They spent the rest of the afternoon making the sandcastle. Finally it was time to go home so the four bears left the sandcastle. Do you think the sandcastle is still there? Can you draw a picture of the sandcastle?

Henrietta took the big purple umbrella. Thelma had the large beach blanket. Harry carried the huge red and green picnic basket. Tom using both hands carried the cooler. They walked from the beach to the car. After they put everything in the car and when each had their seatbelt on, Henrietta and Thelma said they had a surprise for Harry and Tom on the way home. Harry and Tom looked at each other and couldn’t guess what the surprise was. What do you think the surprise was?

The surprise was that they stopped at an Ice Cream store. When they went inside the store, there were so many different kinds of Ice Cream that it took Tom a long time to decide what type of ice cream to have. What is your favorite type of ice cream? What type of ice cream did Henrietta, Thelma and Harry have? What type of ice cream did Tom finally decide to have?

Do you think you could draw picture of a picnic on the beach? What color would you make the large beach blanket that Thelma had? Have you ever made a sandcastle? Maybe you could draw a picture of the four sisters and brother making their sandcastle.

Harry and Tom Arrive in California

L,

Today I received a letter from Tom telling me more about their vacation. Even though the sun was shinning, it was cold outside; I put on my black coat, mittens and gray hat. I drove my purple wheel chair as fast as I could down the ramp and around the side of the house. However when I got to the back yard, I could not find Dan, Charlie or Samantha. There was a red Cardinal on the bird feeder. When I her if she had seen the three friends, she told me they had gone to the store. I thanked her and went back into the house to wait for the three friend’s return.

Just before lunch, I saw them walking down the street carrying bags of groceries. When they reached the house, I asked if they wanted to come for lunch. Samantha said they had talked about making a surprise picnic lunch for me. When they came in side, I had the old red blanket spread out on the living room floor. After the four of us sat down, Dan reached into the large brown picnic basket and took out red cups, yellow plates, and green and blue napkins. Charlie took out the sandwiches. There were round sandwiches, square sandwiches, and sandwiches that looked like triangles. Each different shaped sandwich was different. One was peanut butter, one was cheese, and one was lunchmeat. Next Samantha poured each of us a glass of red milk.

Once we all were ready, I opened Tom’s letter and began to read.

Dear Pippy,

What fun we are having riding on a train. Harry and I spend a lot of time looking out the window at the mountains. We wish you were with us so that you could see the tall mountains. Some of the mountains are covered in snow and are so tall that their tops are hiding behind the clouds.

We traveled all day; Harry and I played games, read books, and looked out the windows some more. After supper on we went for a walk from the first car to the last car of the train. We spent a second night sleeping on the train. The next morning, after breakfast we went back to our room and waited until the train arrived at the train station.

When Harry and I walked down the steps of the train we saw Henrietta and Thelma. They were holding a big sign over their heads. Can you guess what the sign said? It said, “WELCOME TO CALIFORNIA HARRY AND TOM.” Can you guess what color the sign was? What color would you make the sign?

We all talked at once. Harry and I were busy telling Henrietta and Thelma all about the train ride. Henrietta and Thelma were busy telling us about all the fun things we would be doing. As we talked we walked to the girls car. It didn’t have a top and they had painted flowers on the side of it. When we asked them what they did when it rained, they told us that top was just folded down and they could put it back up when it rained.
Henrietta drove us home and Thelma showed us the room we would be staying in. After lunch Henrietta, Thelma and Harry took a nap. I wasn’t tired and wanted to write this letter.

I wish you could be here with us. I really miss you, Dan, Charlie, and Samantha. Please read this letter them for us.

Your friends,
Tom and Harry

As we ate our different shaped sandwiches, we talked about Harry and Tom’s train ride. We wondered what they would be doing tomorrow. What do you think they will do? Can you draw a picture of Henrietta and Thelma’s car? What color would you make their car? What color flowers would you put on their car? Do you know how to make red milk?

Until next time,

Harry and Tom Take the Train to California

L,

Yesterday afternoon, Dan came to the front door with my mail. He was all excited because I had received a letter from Harry and Tom. I told him that I would cut up some red apples and some yellow cheese. I asked him to hurry and ask Charlie and Samantha to come for a snack and we would read Harry ant Tom’s letter together. When the three friends returned, we sat around the kitchen table and had the apples and cheese for a snack. After the snack, we opened the letter and read it. Here is what Harry and Tom wrote.

Dear Pippy,

As you know we took a bright green taxi to the train station. It took a long time to go from our house to the train station. When we arrived at the train station, while I our suitcases out of the trunk of the bright green taxi, Tom paid the taxi driver. After the bright green taxi drove away, we walked into the train station. The train station was very large and very noisy. There were a lot of people walking around and sitting on the benches. Tom and I didn’t know where we should go to get on the train. We walked around until we saw a policewoman. Tom said I should ask her where we should go to get on the train. She asked me if we had bought our train tickets. I didn’t know and said I would have to ask Tom. When Tom said he had not bought the train tickets yet, the policewoman showed us where to buy the tickets.

After we bought the train tickets, Tom and I picked up our suitcases and followed the policewoman to the train. When we got to the train, she told the conductor we were going to visit our sisters who lived in California. The conductor showed us where our room was. Because, we both were tired after the long taxi trip, the busy time getting the train tickets and finding our room on the train, we decided to take naps.

When we woke up the train had left the station and was going down the tracks toward California. Tom and I left our room and walked through the train until we came to the dinning car. We sat at a table by a window. As we ate our supper, we looked out the window and watched the scenery go by. After supper we walked through the entire train. As we walked, we stopped and talked to some of the other people on the train.

The next morning, we sat at the same table and had breakfast. I had oatmeal with raisins and honey. Tom had blueberry pancakes with maple syrup. I looked out the window and saw children standing waiting for the school bus. When I waved to the children, they waved back. I wondered what they had for breakfast. What did you have for breakfast this morning. Can you draw a picture of your breakfast?

After breakfast, Tom looked at a book about the train and I wrote you this letter. The conductor said if I give him this letter, he will mail it to you. Tom said to tell you he plans to write you the next letter. Be sure to read this letter to Dan, Charlie and Samantha.

Your friends,
Harry and Tom

Well, Charlie, Dan, and Samantha were happy to get this letter. We wondered what color the train is. What color did you make the train the train is? Can you draw a picture of the children waiting for the school bus?

Until next time,
Grandpippy
